When to Retire the Tire

Many drivers use the warranty mileage as a determining factor for when to change out their tires. The mileage warranty is a manufacturer’s assurance of the distance of how far a tire should be usable. To use that recommendation without regard to where you are driving is to ignore your tire wear.

You should check your tires once every month to determine tire wear. A simple way to test the lifetime remaining in the tire is the penny test. By pressing the top edge of a penny into the grooves of your tire, you can see when to change your tire. When manufactured, the grooves of a tire cover the whole head of Lincoln. His head disappears. If you can still see the entire head of Lincoln when pressing the penny into the grooves, then it is time to replace your tire.
